In February 2009 my daughter made a bird box as part of half term activity at the local community centre. We fastened the fine looking box onto the fence in the back garden not really expecting anything from it, but within weeks we noticed a pair of blue tits making regular visits to the box.
It wasn’t long before we could hear the sound of tiny cheeps coming from inside and we could see the parent birds carrying a seemingly, never ending supply of food for the young in their beaks.
The activity ended just as quickly as it started. The parent birds to-ing and fro-ing stopped, as did the cheeping. We never saw the chicks fledge but on later inspection of the box the enclosed nest was empty.
We can only hope that they managed to avoid the attention of the ever present magpies nesting in the front garden.
Flushed with the success of our first nesting box, but frustrated by not knowing what was going on inside it, we decided to buy a second box, this time equipped with a camera.
The box replaced the old one and within minutes of putting it up it was visited by a blue tit!
Since then the box has been visited every few days and is hopefully attracting the attention of birds looking for a suitable nesting site.
